Position Summary and
Responsibilities:
Working from our office in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Manager of Special Education, who reports to the School Principal, will manage educational service delivery for our students with special education needs. The Manager will implement the New Mexico Connections Academy Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) procedures and ensure that the school operates in compliance with all New Mexico and federal regulations in a manner that meets all compliance expectations. The Manager will assure that special education teachers are providing a comprehensive special education program that includes specially designed instruction in the least restrictive environment.
The Manager of Special Education will make certain that the school is providing appropriate programs in the least restrictive environment for all students with special needs (students with disabilities, gifted students, and English Learners). Duties will include management of the pre-referral and IEP team processes; maintenance of student data; communication with parents; collaboration with service providers throughout the state; identification, screening, and instruction of ELs; and and compliant operation with special education law and procedures at all times in the following areas:
Responsibilities:
Supervise and lead a team of special education teachers including but not limited to evaluations, instruction, discipline, and professional development.
Ensure compliance with special education processes and timelines.
Interpret and communicate federal and New Mexico special education regulations, policies, and procedures to principal, teachers, and parents;
Implement standardized processes, forms and Connections Academy protocols for all special education procedures;
Maintain a database of and relationships with private providers, community agencies, mental health clinics, district authorizers, etc;
Implement procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment and re-evaluation of students with regard to the special education services program;
Oversee and/or implement all aspects of Child Find referrals, IEP development, diagnostic assessments, and annual/tri-annual reviews.
Implement and maintain a documentation system within the Learning Management System that captures and organizes all special education data;
Conduct all school-based special education related meetings;
Coordinate the set-up and delivery of IEP-mandated direct services to students, whether through direct in-house teacher intervention or contracted related services.
Oversee the development, tracking, dissemination and proper implementation of IEP-mandated accommodations for students with disabilities during state testing events;
Ensure the completion of screening, identification, annual testing and instruction to English Learners;
Oversee and advise on SST meetings to ensure compliance with Response to Intervention and special education referral timelines;
Collaborate with Connections support staff and members of the local school team concerning all facets of programming for students with special needs, from identification to transition and dismissal;
Work directly with parents, as needed, to answer questions and ensure that all school actions are in compliance, and in the interest of maximizing student learning in the Least Restrictive Environment;
Develop a working knowledge of Connections Academy's curricular options, and how they can be adapted and implemented to meet specific student needs;
Plan, implement, and evaluate staff in-service activities;
Perform such other duties as assigned by the School Principal or corporate Director of Special Education.
Requirements
Masters' Degree
Degree in Special Education.
New Mexico Special Education certification
New Mexico Pre K-12 Administrative license
Occasional travel is required for testing and training.
Teaching experience in Special Education
Experience leading/managing a Special Education program
Administrative experience a plus.
Experience working within New Mexico's STARS
Work onsite from the New Mexico Connections Academy Santa Fe office.
Expertise in special education law and compliance.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Customer focused approach.
High degree of flexibility.
Demonstrated ability to work well in fast paced environment.
Technologically proficient (especially with Microsoft Office products).
