Why does the job exist?This position will assist the Traffic Engineer by providing traffic engineering expertise in the area of reviewing and evaluation of traffic impact studies, traffic control plans, signing and striping and guardrail program, special event permits, and access permits for District Five. How does it get done?Incumbent will review and process permit applications, developing purchase orders for pavement marking and guardrail repairs. This position conducts filed visits to inspect sign installations, guardrail installations, and striping installations. Incumbent will also provide plan development comments on New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) design projects and provide technical support to the maintenance patrols. Who are the customers?Internal NMDOT employees, external customers, and the traveling public. Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have the following:
-Excellent customer service skills;-Highway design and or construction experience;-Traffic Engineering experience; and-Current New Mexico Professional Engineer License. Minimum QualificationBachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire. Substitution TableNo substitutions. Must possess required licensure, certification or registration and required number of years of experienceEmployment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Some travel and extended overnight stays as applicable are required. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Supplemental Information
