Why does the job exist? This position examines, analyzes and interprets tax accounting records for the purpose of determining compliance with federal and state laws, statutes, rulings, and regulations, and generally accepted accounting and auditing standards.
How does it get done? A Tax Auditor-I conducts protest case of small to moderate-sized businesses and individuals.
Work will be performed independently or as a member of a team.
This involves analysis and evaluation of accounting systems, accounting records, and third-party documentation to prepare and present audit reports.
This position focuses primarily, but is not limited to, gross receipts, compensating, withholding and income taxes.
Who are the customers? This position serves New Mexico taxpayers, businesses external agencies and the Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD).
Ideal Candidate Preferred
Experience:
Familiarity with New Mexico tax laws, regulations, decisions, orders and rulings Research and analyzing documents Effective communication and listening skills Demonstrated quality customer service Minimum Qualification Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Taxation to include nine (9) semester hours of accounting or auditing (three (3) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to three (3) semester hours of accounting or auditing).

Employment Requirements Must be current with all tax reporting/payment.
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or must obtain Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions Office setting, exposure to VDT, extensive personal computer and phone usage.
Extended periods of sitting and some lifting.
Good communication skills; Interacting with the public required.
High pressure/stress situations.
Some outdoor work may be required.
