Why does the job exist? The Boards and Commissions Division oversees administration of 29 professional and occupational licensing boards and commissions and approximately 100,000 individual licenses ranging from dentists and social workers to real estate brokers and cosmetologists.
This position is located within the Division's Health Licensing Bureau, based out of the Department's Santa Fe office.
The Licensing and Support Specialist will assist with day-to-day licensing matters, including receiving, processing, and approving applications for initial licensure and renewal of active licenses.
The Licensing and Support Specialist will serve as a primary contact and manage phone calls and emails related to their assigned boards and licensed professions.
In addition to licensing processes, the position may be called upon to assist board administrators with supporting board meetings, including preparing meeting packets and other administrative support.
This position will work closely with administrative staff and more senior staff, and provides an excellent opportunity for professional growth in the Division.
How does it get done? Independently manage licensing processes of an assigned board or group of boards, including one or more behavioral health boards.
Assist applicants and answer questions from constituents regarding how to both obtain and maintain different healthcare provider licenses in New Mexico.
Engage in daily communication via phone, emails, and assisting walk-in applicants and licensees.
Provide assistance to board administrator on other projects related to board business, including public meetings, rule hearings, communicating with licensees.
Maintain working relationships with other licensing staff, compliance staff and legal counsel in the Division, as well as individuals outside of the Department as needed.
Who are the customers? The Licensing and Support Specialist's primary customers are individuals applying for a professional or occupational license.
The position does assist the Division as a whole in its mission to assist boards and commissions in executing their duties and to ensure that constituents - which includes current licensees, applicants, and other members of the public - are informed as to requirements for initial licensure, renewal, and accountability and compliance actions related to the 29 professions regulated by the Division.

The ideal candidate should have some or all of the following:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to independently multi-task in a high volume environment with the possibility of frequent interruptions.
Excellent customer service experience or background and interest in assisting diverse groups.
Proficiency with office technology, including the complete Microsoft suite, electronic databases, data entry, and other forms of technology.
Work experience or specific interest in the healthcare industry, public health, or other field the focuses on health, safety, or public policy.
Experience in New Mexico state government, government licensing, other regulatory work; background reading, interpreting, and applying statutes or regulations; or having held a professional or occupational license before are all preferred but not required.
Minimum Qualification High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in office administration, budgeting, purchasing, finance, accounting, auditing, cash management and/or contract management.

Employment Requirements The successful candidate will be required to successfully pass a background check and maintain a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated August 12, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
In addition, employees working in State correctional facilities who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to inmates are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
